Portable Air Band Radio
Having a handheld air band radio as a backup communication device can be valuable if there are issues with the aircraft’s onboard radio system or for emergency communications. We have an entire separate article dedicated to portable air band radios.
CO2 Detector
AV8 Inspector Pro AV8-CO-03
The AV8 Inspector Pro AV8-CO-03 Carbon Monoxide Monitor is specifically designed for aviation use, ensuring its reliability and accuracy in detecting carbon monoxide levels in the aircraft cabin.
It features a compact and portable design, making it easy to carry and install in the cockpit without taking up much space. It offers both visual and audible alarms to alert pilots of elevated CO levels, providing an additional layer of safety and ensuring timely response. Its battery lasts up to 2 years.
Personal Locator Beacon
A PLB is a must have for general aviation pilots, especially those that fly over sparsely populated terrain, or for those who don’t always use flight following. A PLB can be a lifeline in case of an unplanned landing in remote terrain, where communication or immediate rescue may be challenging. It increases the likelihood of a timely rescue by transmitting accurate GPS coordinates to search and rescue authorities, reducing search time and enabling a faster response. Also, if the pilot becomes incapacitated or separated from the aircraft, the PLB allows for passengers, who may not know how to use a radio, to locate and assist them.
ACR ResQLink 400 - SOS
The ACR ResQLink uses built-in GPS technology, enabling accurate positioning information to be transmitted to search and rescue authorities. The digital display provides real-time self-test status, GPS coordinates, and remaining battery life. Bonus features include a high-intensity LED strobe light and an infrared strobe for nighttime visibility. It is also buoyant and water-activated, ensuring it remains operational and visible in case of a water landing or immersion. Perhaps best of all, there are no subscription fees.
First Aid Kit
In remote or isolated locations, where access to medical assistance may be limited, a first aid kit allows pilots to stabilize injuries and provide initial treatment until professional help arrives.
A good pilot takes responsibility for the well-being of passengers, and having a first aid kit demonstrates preparedness and prioritizes the safety and health of those onboard.
Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight/Watertight
Trauma Pak Pro with QuikClot & Tourniquet
We also recommend the The Adventure Medical Kits Trauma Pak. It is designed to address severe injuries and control bleeding effectively. It includes trauma-specific supplies like QuikClot, a hemostatic agent used to promote blood clotting, trauma pads, a SWAT-T tourniquet, and gloves.
Flashlight
Fenix LD22 v2.0
The Fenix LD22 is a powerful flashlight that remains compact and portable, easy to carry in a flight bag or even your pocket without adding bulk or weight. The flashlight offers multiple brightness levels, allowing you to adjust the output to your specific needs. It can be powered by 2 AA batteries, or an included ARB-L14-1100U USB-C rechargeable battery providing up to 220 hours of runtime.
.Firestarter Kit
Exotac nanoSTRIKER XL
The Exotac nanoSTRIKER firestarter kit utilizes a ferrocerium rod and a tungsten carbide striker, providing reliable sparks even in adverse weather conditions, ensuring you can start a fire when needed. It is built to withstand harsh environments, including rain and moisture. The rod and striker material are durable and long-lasting, offering up to 3000 strikes per rod.

Signaling Devices
Sirius Signal C-1003 SOS LED Flare Electronic Visual Distress Signal Kit
The Sirius Signal C-1003 SOS LED Flare offers a highly visible light signal that can be seen up to 10nm. It flashes the US Coast Guard SOS signal for up to 60 hours, and will float on water. It includes a daytime distress flag, which further enhances visibility and increases the chances of being noticed by search and rescue teams or passing aircraft.

Emergency Blankets
Emergency blankets provide insulation and retain body heat, which is important in maintaining core body temperature in case of an emergency or unexpected landing in cold conditions. They are a reliable tool to protect yourself against extreme weather or unforeseen circumstances. Their color can also aid in signaling for help or attract the attention of rescue teams or passing aircraft.

Multi-Tool with Seatbelt Cutter
Carrying a multi-tool that includes a seatbelt cutter is wise. A situation could occur where it becomes necessary to quickly free yourself or your passengers from their seatbelts. Seatbelts can become jammed or unresponsive. If you already have a multi-tool with a generic knife, we recommend a dedicated seatbelt cutter. It ensures you have a reliable tool readily available when needed, instead of relying on other makeshift or less effective cutting methods. You are able to take immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of yourself and your passengers.
Leatherman Wave Plus
The Leatherman Wave Plus has a built-in knife, along with serrated and straight-edge blades, that effectively cut through seatbelts in emergency situations, ensuring a quick and safe escape from a compromised aircraft. It also features various other tools like pliers, wire cutters, screwdrivers, and a saw. The compact and foldable design allows for easy storage and accessibility. Leatherman is renowned for its durable construction, ensuring that the Wave Plus can withstand demanding conditions.
Leatherman Raptor
The Leatherman Raptor is the best choice for dedicated rescue shears, designed to cut through seatbelts and straps in emergency situations. Additionally, the Raptor features a strap cutter, ring cutter, oxygen tank wrench, and glass breaker, which can be valuable in aircraft-related emergencies.

Over Water Flight
Pt. 91.205 (12) requires aircraft being operated for hire and beyond power-off glide distance from shore to carry approved flotation gear readily available to each occupant. Things start to become required for overwater flight in 91.509: No person may take off an airplane for a flight over water more than 50 nautical miles from the nearest shore unless that airplane is equipped with a life preserver or an approved flotation means for each occupant of the airplane. Even more equipment becomes required when operating “more than 30 minutes flying time or 100 nautical miles from the nearest shore, whichever is less.”
Some routes for general aviation aircraft that put the aircraft beyond gliding distance from shore include:
Coastal Tours: Flying along a scenic coastal route, such as the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
Island Hopping: Flying between islands, like the Hawaiian Islands, would require traversing stretches of open water possibly exceeding 50 nm from shore.
Island flights, like Santa Catalina, Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Mackinac Island (Michigan), situated in Lake Huron, or Key West may not be beyond 50nm from shore but can take you beyond gliding distance.
Several routes across the Great Lakes could also take you beyond gliding distance to shore.
Personal Flotation Device
Carrying personal flotation devices (PFDs) for both the pilot and occupants is a wise decision. In the event of a water landing, having PFDs ensures the safety and survival of individuals until rescue arrives. Opting for PFDs with manual activation, as opposed to automatic inflation upon water immersion, is critical. This allows the pilot and occupants to control the inflation process, preventing premature inflation if the cabin fills with water, which could impede their ability to exit the aircraft.
Mustang Survival Corp M.I.T. 100
The M.I.T. 100 offers reliable flotation in emergency situations and features a comfortable and ergonomic design for extended wear. Its manual activation system gives the pilot full control over when to inflate the PFD, providing flexibility and minimizing the risk of accidental inflation. Its durable construction and high-quality materials ensure long-lasting performance, making it a dependable choice for pilots seeking a trusted and effective survival PFD.
ONYX M-16 Belt Pack
The ONYX M-16 Belt Pack allows for convenient wear during flight, ensuring readiness in case of an emergency water landing. With its manual inflation mechanism, the pilot retains control over when to activate the PFD, providing added flexibility and peace of mind. This lightweight and versatile option demonstrates its suitability for pilots seeking comfort, mobility, and a manually inflatable PFD solution.
